The largest crater in the world, the Ramon Crater is a beautiful site. Ancient geological changes have formed this hot desert, where water gathers only immediately after rainfall and vegetation is scarce. Tall brown and white rocks dot the landscape and an occasional ibex can be spotted.
Start a tour of the crater with a visit to the Ilan Ramon Visitors Center. The center combines an interactive exhibit of the life of Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon with a 3D demonstration of how the crater was formed. Pick up a map of the crater’s trails and consult with the guides about which which one to follow.
The crater offers both short and long hikes. In hot weather, it is important to start out early in the morning and best to be out of the sun by 10 AM. In the winter, check that flooding hasn’t made the area unsafe.
For some amazing views of the crater from above, walk along the path which stretches from the Ilan Ramon Center into the town of Mitzpe Ramon. Or visit the lobby of the Beresheet hotel, which has a balcony directly overlooking the crater. On a late summer afternoon, the balcony provides a pleasant breeze along with the stunning view.
While in Mitzpe Ramon, consider a visit to the Alpaca Farm, where you can see and pet these exotic animals.
